West Sussex County Council are warning residents of a new scam where criminals are making cold calls to people asking for their bank details in order for them to receive the government’s £150 energy rebate. If you receive such a call then hang up immediately – WSCC state that councils will never ask you to provide your bank details over the phone. If your council tax or other account with the council is paid by direct debit they will already have your bank details on record – if not, the council will send you a letter in the post. More information about phone scams and how to get a Call Blocker can be found on WSCC’s Trading Standards webpages here.
