Bury Open Spaces Management

Bury Parish Council has recently been granted funding under the South Downs Beeline scheme to allow us to establish a wildflower meadow on part of the cricket ground outfield, an area of about 1900 metres squared. The South Downs grants officer appointed the charity Plant Life as adviser. During a site visit, they pointed out that there were already quite a lot of wildflowers present, as this particular area had not been cultivated for many years. They advised the existing plant stock can be boosted and encouraged by cutting the vegetation and collecting the arisings to prevent the build-up of nutrients, as wild flowers like a low nutrient soil level. Then to sow yellow rattle flower seed as this plant suppresses the surrounding vegetation thereby allowing wildflowers to flourish.

Our contractor Primavera has already undertaken an initial cut and will follow on with a further cut and seeding later this year.
