A29 Speed Reduction in Bury

West Sussex Highways are due to start the works to implement a permanent speed limit reduction from 50mph to 40mph on Bury Hill and the A29 through Bury on Monday 21st July. The works are expected to take five days to complete and will be carried out during the daytime between 08:00 and 17:00 each day. Highways do point out that these works are weather dependent and may be cancelled at short notice but they will endeavour to inform us should there be significant changes to the programme.

Once the 40mph speed limit has been implemented, Bury can then operate a Community Speedwatch Scheme. Greg Brown of the Bury A29 Road Improvements Committee reports that so far 10 volunteers have signed up to help operate the scheme. Sussex Police will carry out site risk assessments to determine the locations where we can operate Speedwatch. Training of the volunteers is due to take place during September/ October and activity is expected to start at the end of October, following 3 months of motorist ‘familiarisation’ with the changes to the speed limit.
