This superb collection of postcards of Bury in the past has been loaned to your parish council website by Tony Pratt, creator of the Arun Valley Post Card Trail collection of videos, including his video about Bury which you can find in the Memories Of Bury section of this website. The village owes a huge thank-you to Tony for providing us with this wonderful collection of postcards providing an insightful glimpse of life in the village back in the day, and for all the research that Tony has put into the accompanying captions. Many of these low numbered cards were probably photographed around 1901 or 1902. Posted Littlehampton June 18, 1906. Sent to Mrs. Hadd, Forest Hill, London S.E. The White Horse on the London Road is the last building towards the back of this view. Note the primitive condition of the road and absence of traffic apart from a single horse and cart. Are the people here waiting for transport to arrive? This was the coach route to Arundel. Publisher: J. White & Son, Littlehampton.
Posted Pulborough July 27, 1906. Sent to Mr. John L. Denman, Upper Totease, Buxted, Sussex. Text mentions senders are just off for a day on the river. Probably photographed 1901 or 1902 as it shows the Farm before major extension work which is completed in cards of a few years later. Publisher: J. White & Son, Littlehampton.
Posted Pulborough 25th July 1916. Sent to Mrs. E. Dearling c/o Mrs. Blair, Married Quarters, Bulford Camp, Salisbury, from Flo (Dearling's daughter), with text giving family news. See video for more on the Dearlings. Card poor for detail but links all the views to a similar early 1900s date. Publisher C.G. (Cecil) Travers of Hove.
Posted Bury, December 17th 1911. Clearly intended as seasonal greetings, sent to Mrs. M. Whitmarsh, North Havant, Hants. Address of origin given as Bury Vicarage, sent from Flo (not the same person as on the Travers Multiview above as there are several differences in the characteristics of the writing). Published by J.White & Son, Littlehampton.

Sent to Miss Lirom, South Woodford, Essex. ‘Dear A, love to all, M.’ General view from S shows centre right the back of Martins farmhouse before the fire, and the Arundel Road with the White Horse on the left. Posted Bury February 2nd 1907. Sent to Miss Bertha Lee, The Vicarage, Bury as a birthday card. View shows the old Arundel Road with White Horse on the right and the ‘Club’ on the left, no longer extant but see the O.S. map from 1914. Published by J.White & Son (early series).
Posted Bury February 23rd 1908. Sent to Madame J. Lecoq, Colombes, Seine, France with a French text. View shows The Street with Village Shop, called Lavenders Stores at that time, although at a later date it was run by the Grinsted family who published postcards under their own name between the wars. Note the horse wagon just beyond the shop, this could possibly belong to the local ‘blind carrier’ George Dearling who is featured in All About Bury, by Lilian E. Brown and also in the AVPT Bury video. Published by J.White & Son (early series).
Posted Hampstead August 12th 1907. Sent to Miss C. Hoare, 22 Goldstone Road, Hove. ‘Dear Sis, you sent the donkey but you sent no beans to feed him with. Young prinny asked himself over to dinner today, like his impudence. Love from Auntie.’ View shows The Square from SW with end of East Old Cottage and Slate Cottage on left, Stores on right and the 4 cottages referred to as ‘The Old Pub’ in the background. Plus some young residents posing for the picture. Probably published by White but not shown on card.
Posted Bury September 6th 1911. Sent to Miss Bertha Lee, Davie Burn House, Auchindachy, Nr. Keith, Scotland (another vicarage!). From Horace, one of her brothers. View shows The Square from SW with cottages comprising "The Old Pub" and the signpost for Church lane on right. No publisher shown, but back design suggests Mezzotint of Brighton.

Posted Bury July 22nd 1911. Card sent to Miss B. Lee c/o Mrs. Erskine, Keith, Scotland. View shows Bury House, clearly very new in this photograph, built on site of Martins which burnt down in 1909. AVPT Bury video has other examples of postcards sent to this ‘collector’ who originally lived for a while in the Vicarage. Publish by J. White & Son, Littlehampton.

Posted Pulborough July 1905. Sent to Mr. Thos. Shepherd, Hampstead, London NW. From Millie Shepherd. View shows Prattendens Corner. Text mentions picture is 'Grandma Ede's house with Millie outside taken just 12 months ago. Bertie is quite well, kind regards from all at the Ferry.’ No publisher.
Posted Bury 1914. Sent to No. 82224 Corpl. E. Dearling, 218 Battery R.F.A., Bulford Camp, Salisbury Plain, Wilts. ‘Dear Dad much love from Flo.’ For more on the Dearlings see the AVPT Bury video. The view shows the Old Vicarage and includes the residents. Almost certainly that is the Rev. John Edward Sale at this time, presumably with his daughter, and wife behind the window. Wonder where Bertha Lee was? Publisher probably C.G. Travers of Brighton.
Unposted, but written on back in ink is ‘From G.Arbery, Arundel’ so it may have been enclosed with other correspondence. Probably very early 1900s. View shows the Black Dog. The pub name changed to include ‘and Duck’ apparently as the owners dog was so often seen carrying one after a shooting expedition! The building features in the AVPCT Bury video. Identities of the people in the picture are not known. Unknown publisher.
